The story
White Fang is born in the wild, three-quarters wolf and one-quarter dog. Hunger and danger teach him the law of the wild before he comes into the hands of humans.
A cruel owner turns him into a fighting dog, until Weedon Scott rescues him and teaches him something he has never known: kindness.
Themes: nature and nurture, survival, cruelty and kindness, the Yukon.
Why it's a good book for language learners
White Fang mirrors The Call of the Wild in reverse — wild to tame instead of tame to wild — so reading both is a great way to recycle vocabulary. London's sentences are clear and his descriptions of the animal's thoughts are easy to follow.
What you'll practise
- Animal behaviour vocabulary
- Cause and effect in narration
- Describing emotions and instincts
- Past tenses in long narratives
Reading tip
Read it after The Call of the Wild and compare how the same words are used in both books.
Did you know?
London wrote it as a companion to The Call of the Wild, telling the opposite journey.
